Quick Guide: Managing Your Child’s Fever

Managing your childs fever by Dr Ramnik Mathur

Seeing your child with a fever can be a worry, but it’s a normal sign that their body is fighting off an infection. Here is a simple guide to help you manage their fever and keep them comfortable at home. For personalised advice, you can always consult a consultant paediatrician in West London.

Use Medication Safely and Effectively

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are effective for reducing fever and discomfort. To help your child feel better, use them as directed on the label. Giving them regularly, as per the correct dosing schedule for your child’s age and weight, can be more effective than waiting for the fever to spike again.
Important: Always check the correct dose and you can give both paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time if both have not been given in the last 6 hours.

Prioritise Ventilation and Light Clothing

Don’t overheat your child. Keep their room well-ventilated by opening a window or using a fan to circulate the air. Dress your child in light clothing to help them stay cool and comfortable.

Keep Them Hydrated

Fever can lead to dehydration, so it’s vital to encourage your child to drink. Offer small, frequent sips of water, milk, or other fluids. Don’t worry too much about food; fluids are the priority while they are unwell.

When to see a Doctor

While most fevers are not serious, you should seek immediate medical advice or consult a consultant paediatrician in West London if your child:

  • Is under three months old.
  • Is struggling to breathe.
  • Is unusually drowsy or difficult to wake.
  • Has a stiff neck or a rash that doesn’t fade when you press on it.
  • The fever lasts for more than 3-5 days.
